Covered California Clarification on Premium Payment Extension Deadline

Many Covered California health plans have  announced that they are extending the deadline for the first first month’s premium payment for people who enrolled for a January 1 or February 1 effective date.  The January 31, 2014 payment extension does not change your effective date.  If you enrolled for Covered California coverage to begin on January 1, paying by the January 31 deadline means that the coverage start date is retroactive to January 1.  For those who signed up for a February 1 effective date, paying by January 31 would mean that coverage begins on February 1.   The law requires that the Covered California health plans must cancel membership for anyone who does not pay the first month’s premium payment by the deadline.

If your Covered California policy was cancelled because payment was not received by the health plan in time for the deadline, you will have to re-enroll in coverage.  To assist consumers, we have established a toll-free hotline to help re-enroll if your plan was cancelled.  You can reach us at 800-788-2197.
